Moving House in Singapore: 5 Things I Learned (The Hard Way)

I’ve moved homes in Singapore more times than I care to count, with a child, with a job, with logistics that don’t always play fair. This isn’t a guide for the Pinterest-perfect move. It’s for those of us juggling real life while trying to box it all up neatly.

Here are five things I’ve learned along the way:

1. Property agents work for the landlord — not for you.

You might expect advice or negotiation support, but most agents are focused on closing the deal. Read every clause. Ask uncomfortable questions. You’re the one who’ll be living with the consequences.

2. Don’t underestimate the timing game.

In Singapore, handovers are brutal. You’ll likely have to clean one place and move into the next within hours. Overlap your lease by a few days if you can. Peace of mind is worth the rent.

3. Cleaning is a battlefield.

Landlords expect a “professional cleaning” — and their definition may differ from yours. Take photos before and after, and never return keys before they’ve inspected.

4. Furniture sizes don’t respect HDB lifts.

Measure your lift. Then measure your sofa. Enough said.

5. Moving is emotional, even when it’s logical.

You might be upgrading or downsizing, leaving bad memories or chasing a better commute — but it’s still a change. Let yourself feel it. Let your child feel it too. The emotional weight is as real as the physical one.
